It’s about showing up and walking the messy path honestly. It’s primal. You want to stand between them and everything that could hurt them. You’d take the hit, carry the burden, just to keep them whole.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBut part of love is learning when to step back. There comes a time when protecting can’t mean holding on too tight. It has to mean standing close, watching, guiding, but not wrapping them in cotton wool. Because they won’t grow strong if they’re never allowed to fall and get back up.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt’s one of the hardest parts, holding back when every bit of you wants to step in. Trusting that the love you’ve given them, the roots you’ve planted, will hold. Protection isn’t always about guarding, sometimes it’s about preparing. The noise, the mess, the worries, it’s all gone and it’s just them, their soft face and slow breath. Hands curled the same way they did when they were tiny. And your whole heart aches in the best way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou find yourself wishing they could stay this perfect forever, untouched by the world, innocent and safe. And sometimes, instead of just simply feeling that joy, you catch yourself checking - Are they warm enough? Is everything ok? And sometimes catastrophising - Are they still breathing? How could I live without them?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt’s what we do, we love so much that we brace for the worst, even in the sweetest moments. Stop and take a breath. Feel the love and joy. Stand a little longer and just be grateful for what’s right in front of you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eThe horses behind Devotion\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen I was developing the idea for \u003cem\u003eThe Shape of Love\u003c\/em\u003e and thinking about the exhibition’s theme, I knew I wanted to draw or paint a horse as part of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis drawing is also a tribute to my late mare, Cregclare Jasmine, and her foals, Summer and Jazz. When you’re barely holding yourself together and there’s no one else to step in, but someone else needs you more, so you keep going.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMotherhood is full of that bone deep tired giving. You learn to run on half empty after pouring parts of yourself out over and over. It’s not easy, but love demands it. It doesn’t ask if you’re ready or wait until you’re rested, it just turns up, hungry and loud, and you have to meet it anyway.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSometimes enduring doesn’t look brave or strong. Sometimes it’s lying flat on your back, drained, while they crawl all over you. It’s letting yourself fall down for a bit without guilt, knowing it doesn’t mean you love them any less.
