Devotion is the kind of love that feels lucky just to watch them dream. There’s something almost sacred about watching a child sleep. In those still moments, everything else just drops away. The noise, the mess, the worries, it’s all gone and it’s just them, their soft face and slow breath. Hands curled the same way they did when they were tiny. And your whole heart aches in the best way.

You find yourself wishing they could stay this perfect forever, untouched by the world, innocent and safe. And sometimes, instead of just simply feeling that joy, you catch yourself checking - Are they warm enough? Is everything ok? And sometimes catastrophising - Are they still breathing? How could I live without them?

It’s what we do, we love so much that we brace for the worst, even in the sweetest moments. Stop and take a breath. Feel the love and joy. Stand a little longer and just be grateful for what’s right in front of you.

The horses behind Devotion

When I was developing the idea for The Shape of Love and thinking about the exhibition’s theme, I knew I wanted to draw or paint a horse as part of it.

This drawing is also a tribute to my late mare, Cregclare Jasmine, and her foals, Summer and Jazz. Jasmine was such an amazing mum.

I’ve included some of my photographs of Jasmine and her family alongside the artwork.
